Lac yields colors from crimsons to burgundy reds to deep purples. It is sourced from the resinous secretion of the insect Laccifer lacca. These insects are cultivated on a wide variety of trees one of which is the Dhak, Butea monosperma, more commonly known as flame-of-the-forest. The beautiful blossoms of this tree are used to worship the god of fire by Hindus and have been a subject of traditional poetry. The colours achieved with lac are very warm and soft.
We use Lac Black dyestuff to obtain two shades of purple.
