Lac yields colors from crimsons to burgundy reds to deep purples. It is sourced from the resinous secretion of the insect Laccifer lacca. These insects are cultivated on a wide variety of trees one of which is the Dhak, Butea monosperma, more commonly known as flame-of-the-forest.
