Cutch or catechu is a dyestuff extracted from a syrupy liquid of the Acacia catechu tree. The tree is common to most parts of India, Indonesia and Peru. Indian cutch is by far the most beautiful and a great source of colourfast shades of brown – cinnamon, nutmeg, and clove. Catechu is also used as a breath-freshening spice mixture in ayurvedic medicine and in licorice pastilles in France and Italy alike.
